How to Stay Fit During Monsoon: 10 Effective Indoor Workouts You Can Do at Home

During the monsoons it is harder to stick to your usual workout routine. Rain may keep you from going for your morning walk or run, and you may end up spending more time indoors. but missing your outdoor workout doesn't mean you have to stop exercising. On rainy days, a short workout at home can be an easy way to stay active.

There is no need for a spacious area or costly equipment for exercising at home. Only a mat and about 20-30 minutes of practice are required to start working on strength and flexibility without using gym equipment or gyms. One can select the movements based upon fitness level and space available at home.

Why Monsoon Wrecks Fitness Routines More Than People Realize

Rain isn’t the only reason it can be harder to stay active during the monsoon. High humidity can make exercise on the outside uncomfortable, and various changes in daily habits can make it easier to avoid exercise. A rainy day can ruin your early workout plans if you are one of those people who like to exercise in the morning. Once you have missed a few sessions, it can be challenging to resume.

This can affect more than just your workout routine. A few weeks of decreased activity may impact your energy, sleep, and mood. Regular physical activity can also help with stress, so taking a long break from exercise may make it harder to manage everyday stress. This is why having a simple indoor workout routine can be useful during the monsoon.

Ten Indoor Workouts That Need Almost Nothing

Bodyweight Squats

Feet shoulder-width apart, sink down like you're about to sit in a chair, push back up through the heels. That's it. No equipment, and it scales itself, go shallow and slow when starting out, deeper and quicker once the legs catch up. Once the movement becomes comfortable, one may start to land on three sets of 12 to 15.

Push-Ups

The chest, shoulders and core work as a single unit. If the full version is too much right now, try wall or knee pushups as these work with the same muscles with less weight. Three low-quality tries at the full one were typically outdone by ten lower-quality reps of the modded one.

Planks

Thirty seconds is enough to feel your whole core light up, shoulders and back included. Unlike a lot of exercises chasing visible muscle, this one build actual stability, which quietly pays off in posture and a happier lower back.

Lunges

Step forward, lower back knee to floor, push back up. It strikes the legs at an angle which they never touch. Ten to twelve repetitions on each side and, while strength gets better, so does balance.

Jumping Jacks and High Knees

Increased body temperature, rapid pulse, no need to get outside. Do a minute of jacks, a minute of high knees, repeat 3 or 4 times, and you will have a true cardio session in less than 10 minutes.

Stair Climbing

Got stairs at home? A few minutes up and down works legs and lungs at once. Zero setup, no need to even change clothes, just go.

Skipping Rope

Even the rope provides one of the best cardio bangs possible in a small space. Begin with 1-minute sessions and gradually increase the length of time; jumping into long sessions can cause the knees and calves to get tired.

Yoga and Surya Namaskar

The Sun Salutation sequence combines stretches, strength, and breathing into one movement. Ten slow rounds target almost all of the major muscles and help relieve the stress that accumulates from being cooped up in the house for too many days.

Dancing

Dance to a song for fifteen or twenty minutes; it hardly seems like “exercise,” but it is. Great option for the days when the motivation is at zero, since it doesn't feel like a workout at all.

Resistance Band Exercises

Very compact and surprisingly effective, but low cost. Banded movements are a great way to add some extra resistance to your body's movements, which some of them might not be able to provide on their own.

Building an Actual Weekly Routine Out of This

Not everyone is expected to perform all 10 times every day. Doing a split: 2- or 3-days strength with bodyweight and bands, 2- or 3-days strength with cardio, skipping, dancing, stairs. Just run through some warm-up and cool-down stretches before it's time for the intensity to increase, and it will help your body recover quickly for the next go. Weekends can also be a good opportunity to mix things up a bit, e.g. from the list, so that by week 3 it doesn't feel stale.

In this case, it's all about consistency, not intensity. Four focused minutes four times a week is more fitness throughout the entire monsoon than one shoddy hour, twice before swallowing a grimace.

Staying Safe While Working Out Indoors

The number one reason for injuries associated with home workouts is cluttering, so clean up the space before anything else is cleaned up. Even in the house, floors can be slippery in wet conditions, so a true mat or slip resistant floor is a must, not a nice to have. Airflow is important, if it's a challenging session, open a window or air a room to make it feel a bit more challenging than it is. During the monsoon wet and breathable clothing comes in handy more than the name implies: with the humidity already making everything feel warmer than the thermostat indicates.

Water is something that is easy to forget, as thirst does not strike as strongly in more cool and wet weather as it does in warmer conditions, even though the body is still perspiring heavily while it is working out. Drink before, during, and after, as you would do in the middle of summer, but don't wait until the session begins. Do not try to continue if the experience of breathlessness, dizziness or unusual fatigue occurs during the session; this is a warning sign to stop and rest, don't keep going.

FAQs

1. Can I exercise inside every day during the monsoons?

Yes, for most people if the intensity of exercise changes and your muscles recover after a hard workout. Small amounts of light activity such as yoga or walking in place are typically okay every day, without a rest day.

2. What is the minimum space requirement for these activities?

Barely any. Squats, pushups, planks, Sun Salutations, and the rest happen within about a square foot of yoga mat.

3. Does such a workout relieve the lethargy that the monsoon often brings?

Often, yes. Regularly moving up and down with better circulation and quality of sleep help to beat the tiredness of a gloomy day.

4. Does any special equipment need to be used?

No. With, say, squats, pushups, lunges, planks, jumping jacks, bodyweight does a lot of it. A band or jump rope will help make it interesting but not require it to get results.
